This series comprises records pertaining to a program of volunteer service administered by the Deaconess Community of the Lutheran Church in America (LCA). This program, last known as the Diaconal Year Program, was geared towards laypersons who wished to give of their time and talents to the church-at-large and its congregations, related institutions and agencies. These files represent daily activities involved in the administration and promotion of this program. Records are from 1957-1989 with the bulk dating from 1979-1987. Record types include business correspondence, circular letters, reports, new articles, news releases, brochures, memoranda, evaluations, newsletters, posters, and schedules. The series is arranged into the following sub-series: general subject, newsletters, program orientation, and promotion and interpretation. Subject matter includes a reunion for the program's 30th anniversary, changing the name of the program, orientation for new volunteers, efforts to generate publicity for the program, work of the program's advisory committee created in 1986, volunteer opportunities within the church, and consolidating the church's volunteer programs. Records in this series that pre-date and post-date the existence of the Deaconess Community of the LCA were kept in this series for continuity purposes.
